   Advantages  (no particular order)
  • Much more pleasant for operators.
  • 20 to 30% faster metal removal (copper and graphite electrodes).
  • Faster cut time with 0.030" tungsten wire electrodes.
  • Easy flushing (particles are easily and quickly removed from the cut).
  • Elimination of hazardous degreasers.
  • Skin dermatitis eliminated.* Reported to soften the skin, the NF fluid is food-grade. Certifications include, FDA, USDA, USDA H-1, CFIA (Canadian Health & Welfare) and New Zealand MAF.
  • Fumes not offensive.
  • High flash fire and fire points: 345°F and 385°F respectively.
  • No varnish build-up.
  • Excellent particle suspension.
  • DC-arcing virtually eliminated.
  • Safe, easy disposal (can be combined with spent lube oils and recycled).
  • The NF fluid has passed Bioassay (Rainbow Trout, Gulf shrimp and freshwater shrimp).
  • Smoother cutting early-on.
  • Recast equal, or slightly less.
  • Intergranular attack (IGA) about the same.
  • Micro-cracking less.

 Disadvantages  (no particular order)

  • Similar in cost to premium grade EDM fluids.
  • Oil smoke slightly higher than conventional EDM oils (although smoke from the NF fluid is much less disturbing to operators).
  • Fluid slippery when spilled on floor.
  • Parts somewhat slippery (operators report little problem in adjusting to this).
  • Fluid thickness may be a problem in cutting smaller holes.

*Caution is required should any EDM oil be allowed to oxidize. As a result of the oxidation process that can happen in all oils, organic acids can be created in the fluid. These acids, in constant contact with the skin, can lead to dermatitis in operators with more sensitive skin.
